Emmy 2011 - Predictions

The 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards are tonight so I'm offering up who I think should win and who I think will actually win in the major categories.  Though an avid watcher, I've never tried predicting before, so I'll probably get many wrong.

Lead Actor - Comedy
Matt LeBlanc - Episodes
Jim Parsons - The Big Bang Theory
Johnny Galecki - The Big Bang Theory
Louis C.K. - Louie
Alec Baldwin - 30 Rock
Steve Carell - The Office

Should Win:  Steve Carell.  The man has been long overdue for one of these and his farewell tour was good enough that I think he deserves to get the nod.  In his final episode, he managed to pull off all the shades of Michael we've seen over the years splendidly.  Louis C.K. was a close second.

Will Win:  Steve Carell.  A matchup on my first category.  It wouldn't be surprising if Alec Baldwin manages to grab this again, but I think the academy will finally look Carell's way.

Lead Actor - Drama
Steve Buscemi - Boardwalk Empire
Michael C. Hall - Dexter
Kyle Chandler - Friday Night Lights
Jon Hamm - Mad Men
Hugh Laurie - House
Timothy Olyphant - Justified

Should Win:  Jon Hamm.  This is the toughest category.  Any one of these men could take the prize and I would be happy because they all do great work.  Jon Hamm's Don Draper this year was just a cut above the rest.  He completely sold Don's descent into depression and the episode "The Suitcase" was one of the best things I saw all year.

Will Win:  Jon Hamm.  The academy loves Mad Men, but has yet to give it any acting wins.  I think "The Suitcase" will finally pull it off.

Lead Actress - Comedy
Laura Linney - The Big C
Edie Falco - Nurse Jackie
Amy Poehler - Parks and Recreation
Melissa McCarthy - Mike & Molly
Martha Plimpton - Raising Hope
Tina Fey - 30 Rock

Should Win:  Amy Poehler.  Leslie Knope is so loveable.  Strong-willed in policy, yet a nervous wreck at other things.  All the while hilarious.  Her budding romance with Ben this year gave her even more beats to plays and she pulled them all off wonderfully.

Will Win:  Laura Linney.  The academy loves the Showtime ladies, and Laura Linney is an Academy Award nominated actress on top of that.  Tina Fey may make her way back into the fold, inertia is a big part of Emmy's and she's won before, but I'm going with the new and shiny Linney.

Lead Actress - Drama
Elizabeth Moss - Mad Men
Connie Britton - Friday Night Lights
Mariska Hargitay - Law & Order: SVU
Mireille Enos - The Killing
Julianna Margulies - The Good Wife
Kathy Bates - Harry's Law

Should Win:  Elisabeth Moss.  She's been great all along on Mad Men but this season was a step above with her finally asserting herself at work and butting heads with Don.  The aforementioned "The Suitcase" was a spectacular look at those two characters and both leads were tremendous.

Will Win:  Elisabeth Moss.  See Jon Hamm, and watch "The Suitcase."

Supporting Actor - Comedy
Jon Cryer - Two and a Half Men
Chris Colfer - Glee
Jesse Tyler Ferguson - Modern Family
Ed O'Neill - Modern Family
Eric Stonestreet - Modern Family
Ty Burrell - Modern Family

Should Win:  Ty Burrell., I guess.  My least favorite category.  Nick Offerman should be the real "Should Win," but not even nominated.  Phil Dunphy cracks me up, though, so I'll go with him.

Will Win:  Chris Colfer.  Vote spitting will probably happen to the Modern Family guys, and by all accounts (I don't watch, myself), Colfer does great work on Glee.  It's apparently not a funny part, but his show is classified as a comedy so there we have it.

Supporting Actor - Drama
John Slattery - Mad Men
Andre Braugher - Men of a Certain Age
Walton Goggins - Justified
Peter Dinklage - Game of Thrones
Josh Charles - The Good Wife
Alan Cumming - The Good Wife

Should Win:  Walton Goggins.  The man deserves a few Emmy's for The Shield, and is equally deserving for playing Boyd Crowder.  I was tempted to go with Peter Dinklage because he's my favorite part of that show, but Goggins' work is just too good.

Will Win:  Alan Cumming.  After Archie Panjabi's win for The Good Wife last year, I think the other supporting player will grab it this year.  Andre Braugher is an old academy favorite, and it would be wonderful if the academy stuck it to TNT for cancelling Men of a Certain Age.  That's more wishful thinking than anything else.

Supporting Actress - Comedy
Jane Lynch - Glee
Betty White - Hot in Cleveland
Julie Bowen - Modern Family
Kristen Wigg - Saturday Night Live
Jane Krakowski - 30 Rock
Sofia Vergara - Modern Family

Should Win:  Sofia Vergara.  One of the never fail aspects of Modern Family in this up and down season was that Gloria would be funny.  Her accent coupled with her perfect comic timing works wonders.

Will Win:  Jane Lynch.  Emmy inertia.  Lynch won last year, she'll probably win again.

Supporting Actress - Drama
Kelly Macdonald - Boardwalk Empire
Christina Hendricks - Mad Men
Michelle Forbes - The Killing
Archie Panjabi - The Good Wife
Margo Martindale - Justified
Christine Baranski - The Good Wife

Should Win:  Margo Martindale. The power that is Mags.  Martindale made a great season of Justified even better with her amazing portrayal of a hillbilly drug kingpin.  There are some other good performances in this category.  Nothing comes close to Mags.

Will Win:  Margo Martindale.  She really does outshine the field and the fact that she was even nominated at all means the academy took notice.  It may still be a long shot, but I think she'll take it.

Comedy Series
Glee
Parks and Recreation
The Office
Modern Family
30 Rock
The Big Bang Theory

Should Win:  Parks and Recreation.  They pulled off a perfect 16 episode season with zero bad, or even mediocre, episodes.  "Flu Season" was won of the funniest things I saw all year.

Will Win:  Modern Family.  Inertia again.  It may have had a sophomore slump, but the academy loves the broad appeal.

Drama Series
Boardwalk Empire
The Good Wife
Mad Men
Friday Night Lights
Dexter
Game of Thrones

Should Win:  Mad Men.  The fourth season was the best one they've done.  As much I would like to give this to Friday Night Lights' final season or Game of Thrones, Mad Men was just better.

Will Win:  Mad Men.  Emmy inertia of a good kind.  Mad Men has won for it's first three seasons, no reason to think it won't win for it's best.  However, the academy loves HBO, and Boardwalk Empire may somehow slip in there.

So that's it, we'll see how I do tonight.
