NBC Thursday Comedies - Week 24

The Office returns!  Community does a "normal" episode!  30 Rock does what it always does!  I'm not always great at writing the intro paragraph!

Community - "Origins of Vampire Mythology"
After the craziness of last week, things are much more low key in this episode.  This show has given it's characters such rich personalities, that things can still be calm like this and the stories are still wonderful.  The main story this week was Britta's inability to like nice men because she doesn't like herself.  The thing Community does so well is reveal a deep personality flaw like that and not treat it like a joke, but still make it funny.  Troy having feelings for Britta has been hinted at a couple of time before.  I've never been against the idea, but the way Troy reacted to Britta's reaction to his text was heartbreaking.  Then later with Britta's look when Annie revealed it was Troy had me on board completely.  The other two stories took a backseat to that one and were neither great nor bad.  The Jeff and Shirley pairing is a fun one and those two together made that storyline better than it should have been, the same goes for Pierce and Change.  The last story was so slight that that was part of the joke.  I did enjoy the Dean's offense at all the questions about his presence, but I wish they had used John Goodman more.  He deserves more than a single scene when you bring him back.

30 Rock - "Meet the Woggles!"
Just an okay episode this week.  I enjoy the insults that Jack and his mom throw at each other every time she comes back, but the Jack being emotionally closed off is a well they've gone to many times before.  It was all worth it though, when Liz was taking credit for making their confessions of love happen.  I suppose all the great one-liners Elaine Stritch had made it worth it, too.  The Jenna story coasted by on the Wiggles parody, which only really worked when they were singing about race separation.  It did bring itself up with Jenna discovering Paul dressed as another woman, for being a horrible person you still did feel for her in that moment.  The Tracey story was fun, but the only part I really laughed at was Liz going along with the making it rain and dancing.

The Office - "Welcome Party"
If there's one thing this show can still consistently get right is cold opens.  The genius of this one being that I really couldn't remember if Stanley has a mustache or not.  The story of Nellie's lost love and Jim and Pam (and even Dwight) helping her out with the magician was well done.  It's a great way to get us to understand a little better why she is the way she is.  It also makes us feel for her some before Andy gets back and understandably wants his job back.  It seems Robert has a thing for Nellie, which is intriguing.  This episode went a long way to helping me like Catherine Tate on this show.  The whole Andy-Erin thing though, blerg.  Did they really need to drag this out?  They could have had the breakup happen offscreen.  I imagine that would make a pretty funny talking head about how she took the news.  I just want this whole thing to be over and they're together and that's it.  Maybe the writers can find some good stories out of their relationship because this whole will they- won't they was just plain tiresome.
