The Legend of Korra - 1x09 & 1x10

Real life has intruded into my writing these past couple of weeks.  You'd think there would be less things going on in the summer.  Therefore, this will be a quick post on the past two episodes of The Legend of Korra before the double episode finale tomorrow.

"Out of the Past"
Let me get it out of the way up front.  Aang!  Toph!  Sokka!  Spiritbending!  Okay, now that's done with.  It seems what Aang has been trying to tell Korra with these visions is that Tarrlok is Yakone's son and that he should be able to bloodbend without the full moon like his father could.  Korra found this out too late, but it was very cool to see the flashback court scenes.  Sokka's voice was particularly spot on for what I'd imagine an older Sokka to sound like.  I also like that even though Korra has trouble with the spiritual side of being the Avatar, Aang was still able to get through to her.  I imagine eventually we'll get a face to face meet up in the spirit world like Aang would do with Roku and Kyoshi (maybe in the finale?), but until then Aang is going to impart his knowledge anyway he can.

On the searching side, Lin got to be all kinds of awesome in the breakout of the captive police.  Lin is the character I think has grown on me the most throughout the season, made even more evident by the next episode.  Asami now knows about the kiss after wondering why Mako seemed overly concerned about finding Korra.  Poor Bolin, he doesn't mean to do it.  We also got a little bit of Bolin humor with him being pee shy.  Also, metalbending a zipper, I not sure how the Nickelodeon censors let that one by, but it was really great.  Amon somehow tracks down Tarrlok and Korra and takes away Tarrlok's bending.  Why he's able to resist bloodbending even when Aang could only do it through the Avatar State is a mystery, but ups his badass factor by a lot.  I like how Korra used her smarts to get out of the box, and also in not fighting Amon without any backup.

"Turning the Tides"
Talk about setting up for the finale.  The Equalists attack Republic City full force and practically take it over in one day.  The council and the police chief are taken out and Tenzin only escapes because Team Avatar shows up to save him.  The mecha tanks look markedly better this time and the battle against them was well done.  I liked how they've developed a few techniques to deal with them now.  Such as putting water in the exhaust and redirecting the electricity like Zuko once did with lightning.  It was inevitable that Pema would have the baby at the worst possible time and that time arrived when Air Temple Island was being invaded.  Lin did the best she could, but luckily the airbending kids got in on the action.  Meelo even got to use fartbending!

Lin got her last hurrah by taking down the airship and saving Tenzin and his family.  I almost expected her to bend the fin like her mother did.  She gets captured though and Amon takes her bending away in what is easily the saddest scene of the series so far.  The slow motion raindrops as she falls were a beautiful touch, and the music in that moment was properly subdued.  I haven't given the music enough praise as of yet, but it's been great all series.  The infusing of jazz into the traditional asian styles from the first series has fit the switch to the city setting perfectly.  With a major character getting her bending taken away, I wonder if there'll be a way to restore someone's bending down the line.  I feel like it would be a cop out unless handled perfectly, but I sure will miss Lin's awesome bending.

There was not much time for levity, so not much Bolin.  Not that he's only comic relief, he was top notch in the fights, but as for any character stuff from him, he's been kind of sidelined.  Mostly because any free time is taken up with the Korra-Mako-Asami love triangle.  I'm really glad it's not Korra trying to get in the middle of Mako and Asami, and I also like that all involved realize that now is not the time to deal with any of this.  All in all, I'd rather they not have the relationship stuff at all, but it's being handled really well, so I can't complain.  So now Amon is in control of the city, but the United Forces are on their way, commanded by General Iroh!  Can't wait to find out more about that.
