NBC Thursday Comedies - Week 26

Another great night of comedy...and The Office.  I am getting very, very close to that point where I doubt I'll be watching that show next year.  A lot of the actors' contracts are up this year, so who knows who will even be back.  Robert's already leaving and Dwight is suppose to be getting a spin-off.  Isn't eight years enough?

Community - "Basic Lupine Urology"
This may not be the best episode that was a parody, but it may very well be the best pure parody they've ever done.  Everything was a pitch perfect recreation of a Law and Order episode.  The victim being found by random people in the middle of a conversation.  The interviewee who is too busy to stop working while being interviewed.  The attorneys trying to make a case out of flimsy evidence.  All the way up to the coda where some new bad information comes to light.  It really was like a half hour version of Law and Order starring the Community characters.  The characters really did fit well into their rolls, too, my favorite being Abed and Troy as the detectives who switched who was bad co and who was good cop half way through the episode.  I was also happy that Michael K. Williams gelled much better with the cast than he did in his first two appearances.  They even gave him the Omar line that a man needs a code.  Not a deep character study that Community likes to do, but just so much fun it doesn't matter.  R.I.P Starburns.

30 Rock - "Live From Studio 6H"
Another fun episode!  The live show last year was a nice lark, but they really stepped it up for the second effort.  Instead of trying to tell a 30 Rock story in a live format, they went with an SNL sketch format with a flimsy framing story.  It worked like gangbusters.  Nothing really fell flat, but the best of all was the Alfie and Abner sketch.  Jon Hamm is a very funny man and his black caricatures were hilarious.  The other cameos were great, too.  Amy Poehler as a young Liz Lemon was kind of weird, but it's Amy Poehler so you can't complain.  Sir Paul McCartney, Jimmy Fallon, and Fred Armisen.  The best of all was Donald Glover as a young Tracey, just an inspired choice.  Like I said, it's a fun episode that gave all the cast (even Danny!) a chance to shine.

The Office - "Fundraiser"
And then this show comes along to ruin all the fun I was having.  Another lackluster effort all around.  Only a few things made me even crack a smile this episode.  I liked Kevin getting to be the smart one, however briefly, I liked Jim's look when he realized he didn't even have to prank Dwight to get him in this situation, and I liked Nellie trying to bond with Daryl.  Everything else, no thank you, especially Andy trying to act cool when everyone knows he's not.  Last week Andy practically made Robert fire him, and it was made out to be him feeling alive for the first time in days.  Now him regretting that decision would be natural, but to make Robert out as the bad guy didn't sit right with me.  Ed Helms can be very funny breaking down, this was not one of those times.

Parks and Recreation - "The Debate"
Written and directed by Amy Poehler, is there nothing that women can't do?  I'm going to just say this upfront, I would watch an entire episode of Andy Dwyer acting out his favorite movies.  Chris Pratt knocked that out of the park.  Paul Rudd's complete obliviousness as Bobby Newport is a treat to watch as well.  His reaction to Leslie's opening statement was just so innocent and endearing you can see why people like him.  Leslie really got to shine at the end with her take down of Sweetums without coming off as bullying poor Bobby.  There were a few nice digs here and there about how ridiculous debates are now with Twitter and the like, and Perd Hapley as moderator is comic gold.  I'm glad the triangle of Tom-Ann-Chris was very short lived, though.  If anything I'm glad it gave us the reverse of last week with April giving a pep talk to Tom.  Chris' amazing power of spin was another highlight.  Even though I had heard the "literally overflowing with love" line a bunch of times in promos, it still made me laugh.
