NBC Thursday Comedies - Weeks 19 & 20

The Office and Parks and Recreation were in reruns for a few weeks, so this is a Community only post.

"Alternative History of the German Invasion"
Finally some quality study room time. At least until the Germans take it away. I really like the idea that the study group was more totalitaristic over the years than the actual Germans. It hearkens back to when the group destroyed Todd because all they care about is themselves. Malcolm McDowell joins the list of Greendale teachers as their history professor and I think he'll fit in great. I hope they have him for a good number of episodes. It was tough to get a handle on Professor Kane last year with Michael K. Williams only getting three episodes. Speaking of guest stars, it was a real shame they couldn't get Nick Kroll back as the head German. Chris Diamantopoulos did a fine job as replacement. In the end, the study group learns a lesson, but fails the assignment. Chang returns. Since his tag in the premiere, we haven't seen him at all. I absolutely love the reason they took him in boiled down to they paid us. Changnesia is almost certainly a ruse of some sort, and I'm curious to see where that goes.

"Cooperative Escapism in Familial Relations"
A tale of two episodes. All things having to do with Jeff and his father, great. The rest of the episode, not so much. It seemed more of a excuse to do a Shawshank homage than an actual plot. They probably shouldn't have done a Thanksgiving at Shirley's house if the couldn't get Malcolm Jamal-Warner back as Andre. Shirley makes a passing mention about him not being around to be the buffer for his family, but it's just lip service. There was some good jokes here and there about the stale dip, Pierce being a slapstick comic hit, and Troy not being able to complete the fake story of what they were up to. The good stuff of the episode was in the father issues Jeff had to work through. I really like how they've been handling Britta through this arc. She's obviously not good at being a therapist, but she's still forcing Jeff to confront things. Community, like any sitcom, can take certain traits too far, but here they've struck a good balance for the character. I'm glad for the forward movement on Jeff's father, even if this turns into a zombie season, at least they'll be good emotional moments like this to look back on.
