NBC Thursday Comedies - Week 17

This week on NBC it's Leap Day (except on The Office)!  There is news for that show, though.  James Spader will be leaving after this year.  Apparently the Robert California character was only suppose to be around for one season.  There's also talk of a Dwight spin-off.  That show needs to go before it becomes really sad and people forget that it was ever once good.

30 Rock - "Leap Day"
Not a very good episode.  The absurdity of 30 Rock is in most cases an advantage.  However, sometimes they miss the mark.  The whole idea of Leap Day, in this world, being an actual holiday makes sense, but the execution did not work for me.  There's always good jokes, though, due to the sheer number crammed into every episode.  Tracey finding his way around to the soup kitchen idea twice was good, as was all super nerd references by the billionaire.  It was also a good use of guests stars Jim Carrey and Andie McDowell.  I could definitely see Jim Carrey star in a movie like that.  Overall, not memorable, though.

Parks and Recreation - "Sweet Sixteen"
Another week, another good episode.  Jerry is everyone's favorite punching bag, but it's nice to see an episode about him once and a while.  Even if he's only slightly less of a punching bag on his birthday.  The story about Leslie trying to do both the campaign and her job fits in perfectly with her character.  It also gave us some more Leslie-Ron moments that really highlight how great that friendship has become.  Ron trying to hold down two jobs in middle school is such a perfect character beat.  The Ann-Tom stuff was pretty excruciating, though.  The writers really need to figure those two out or drop it.  The only thing I liked about that plot was Amber getting drunk to deal with them.  Andy figuring out how lonely Chris is and offering Champion as a playmate was a good character building moment for him.  Andy is never going to be very bright, but there are certain things he can pick up on.

The Office - "After Hours"
Better episode this week.  Dwight was dialed down to mostly human levels this time and I enjoyed his trying to out seduce Packer.  It was good to see him make the right decision in the end.  Nellie is starting to grow on me, though she didn't get a whole lot to do this episode besides react to Packer and Dwight.  With James Spader leaving, they may have to beef up her part at the end of the year, maybe even new CEO.  The whole Kathy seducing Jim thing still came out of nowhere, but was handled well this episode.  Mostly because Jim knew right away and was against it.  That he repeatedly used Dwight's craziness to work his way out of it, all the better.  Them having ice cream and watching TV on Dwight's bed was a nice moment that you wouldn't have thought possible between those two.  On the home front, Darryl is going for it with Val and I like the way Pam is helping him because of her past experience.  So much better than Erin and Andy.
